BIG - Beauty Industry Group... Ever heard of it?

I'm going to spill the tea on something you might not know about the hair extension world. You know those brands we see everywhere? Even if you’ve never heard of BIG, you’ve definitely heard of the brands they control. And here’s the real shocker: a lot of them are pulling from the same place—and, oh yeah, they’re all male-owned. Crazy right?

So,why's it a big deal?: many of the hair extension brands that BIG owns—like Bellami, Babe, Hotheads, and Donna Bella—all source their hair from the same factory in Qingdao, China. THose aren't the only brands either!

We’re talking 100% Asian hair that’s being processed and packaged in different ways to appeal to different markets. But don’t be fooled by the branding! At the end of the day, the hair itself is often the same; it’s just the packaging and the story each brand tells that sets them apart. It’s all about the image, and it can be hard to see that what you’re getting from one brand isn’t so different from another.

Now, here's the part that might make you pause, or may not even surprised you because it's just the world we live in: BIG is completely male owned! Yep, you heard me right. In a world where we, as women, are the primary consumers and stylists, it's pretty wild to think that it's mostly men behind the scenes running the show. They’ve nailed the marketing, making these brands feel like they truly “get” us, but the faces behind the curtain are rarely shown, and the fact that they’re male-owned? Hardly ever mentioned.

What really gets me is how these brands are marketed. You’ll see all the glam images, raving testimonials, and influencers swearing by the products, but you never see who's actually behind the brands. It’s all about creating that luxurious feel, making you believe you're getting something super exclusive when, in reality, the hair isn’t as unique as they want you to think. It’s a marketing machine at its finest—crafty, but not always transparent.

Here’s another thing to keep in mind: some of these BIG brands don’t just sell to professionals—they’re also selling directly to consumers, no license needed. And for me as an educator who doesn't teach to those that aren't licensed, it kind of blows my mind because for those of us who work hard to build our reputations using professional-grade products, this can be a little frustrating. It also means there are a lot of extensions out there that might not be installed properly, leading to some subpar results and definitely damage..

What does this mean for you, as stylist who are looking to build their clientele and business? It’s all about looking beyond the brand names and understanding where the hair really comes from. Knowing who’s behind these brands and how they operate helps you make smarter decisions for yourself and your clients. In this luxury industry it's not just about what extensions you're buying—it's about who you're buying them from, and why. Think "ethically sourced"!

Oh, and by the way, these guys are based out of Salt Lake City, Utah—the unofficial capital of hair extensions! If you take a peek at their website, you’ll notice it feels pretty impersonal... probably because they’re cranking out hair for so many brands at once.

But let's be honest... Obviously a lot of stylist don't care or do the research or else they wouldn't be in business. That's why I did the research for you. I'm not here to tell you what to do, i'm here to educate you on why you should research the hair you offer your clients.

Always do your research!;)
