Hair Types and Textures, Why Are They Important!?

Hair Extension types

Why is it important to know hair types and texture as a hair extensions specialist? Well, because not one size fits all! Sourcing from one hair vendor just isn't enough sometimes.

Why would you provide someone with pin-straight hair the same hair extensions as someone with curly hair... I hope you wouldn't!

It's extremely important to source hair based on your client's hair type and texture and their needs. In other blogs, we have talked about the different regions of hair extensions; this is also important to know based on color and texture!

Like you learned in cosmetology school, we have straight, wavy, curly, and kinky hair. Straight hair is the easiest to find and source, while curly and kinky hair is the hardest to find and source, and is usually more expensive to source!

One of the biggest concerns we get with new clients is whether the hair will match their texture. This is normally because they had gone somewhere else where the hair that was provided didn't match their texture, or they've been online and seen horror stories!

You want to be the salon people go to because you are the only one sourcing hair from everywhere to be sure your clients are all getting the best of the best!

When it comes to curly hair, you have to do your research. Companies that have curly hair can sometimes be permed. Permed hair doesn't last, and it also doesn't feel the best. You want to try and find virgin curly hair. The curls will last, and it will feel great! Although it can be more expensive because it is hand-sorted, it's what clients want and need!

A rule of thumb we follow at Studio She is "Double in length and volume." Sometimes you can break rules, but you need to consider the density of your client's hair and be sure you order enough; if not, it can turn out stringy and noticeable!

Understanding hair types and textures is fundamental for hair extension artists. It will help you make informed decisions, deliver exceptional results, and ensure client satisfaction.
