As a stylist, have you ever had a client with just 5 inches of hair sit in your chair, dreaming of 22-inch pinterest perfect hair? If so, then I'm sure you know the challenge that comes with balancing a client’s expectations with what’s actually the reality. If not, you're going to learn about it!

Everyone has their own unique approach, and that’s perfectly okay. But today, I want to share a rule I’ve followed for over 30 years—a method that not only keeps my clients happy but has also helped attract new ones with realistic results.

I'm going to break down the basic rule of thumb for adding length and volume with hair extensions: you can realistically only double the length and volume without risking an awkward transition—or what we like to call "the mullet effect." So, if she has 5 inches of natural hair, you can add around 10 inches for a seamless look.

I remember a specific client who walked into my Baltimore Extensions studio with her heart set on those long, Pinterest-worthy 22-inch extensions, even though her natural hair barely grazed 5 inches. Her dream was big, and I was eager to make it happen, but we had some realistic limits to work with.

This client’s story is special to me, and I think many of you can relate to the excitement—and the challenge—of clients with lofty hair goals. When she first came to me, I had just moved to Baltimore, Maryland. I was enthusiastic, ready to build my business, but still finding my footing in the world of hair extensions. I had a background as a braider, often spending countless hours braiding in hair. But with KTIP extensions, it's a whole different game. This method offers incredible results but comes with its own set of boundaries and techniques.

Back then, I didn’t quite know how to say no. Every request felt like an opportunity to prove myself, and I wasn’t about to turn anything down. So, I took on the challenge, even though I knew we’d have to compromise on the length she wanted. Each session became a learning experience, a chance for us to tweak, refine, and ensure her extensions looked as natural as possible. We found ways to give her longer hair that felt believable without pushing her natural hair too far.

Fast forward to today, and that client is still a loyal regular at Studio She. Our journey together has been amazing—we often joke that she "worked me like a summer job" during those early days as we figured out how to give her the long hair of her dreams. And even now, there’s a bit of playful tension whenever I bring out the scissors to cut and blend her extensions. She’ll always get a little nervous, but that’s part of our bond!

If there’s one takeaway from my experience, it’s this: managing client expectations is key, especially when their dreams might exceed the limits of their natural hair. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative! Finding the balance between what’s possible and what they hope for is what makes you a true professional in this industry. And at the end of the day, seeing a client fall in love with their hair is worth every challenge.

So, to my fellow stylists—keep pushing those boundaries, keep refining your techniques, and remember that every appointment is an opportunity to grow, both for you and your client.
